DC Trip

I just got back from a mission trip in Washington, DC today. That experience was like no other. The main focus for the trip was the homeless people in the city. While we were there, we met 2 women that made a large impact on my life. The first one was named Belinda. She is one of the most outgoing and loud people you could ever meet. I don't know for a fact if she is homeless, but from the way she acted and was, I'm guessing she is. The reason she has made an impact on me is because even though she doesn't have a lot of stuff and even though she just wonders the streets almost everyday, she acted as a caretaker for the other homeless people she knew. When she could, she would feed them. When she had socks, she would give them away. It just amazed me how she would help those in need even though she was in need herself. The second person was Denise. This woman lived and slept on a bench in a park. She is re-learning how to walk because of frostbite on her feet. We talked to her for a while and she was one of the happiest people I've ever seen. She told us she didn't like going to shelters because she loved the outdoors. And even though she lived in not-so-good conditions, she was so happy with her life and she was so independent. It amazes me how selfless and happy these women can be even though they don't have barely anything. We can all learn a lesson from these women. Holbrook Jackson once said, "Happiness is a form of courage." Be happy under every circumstance and nothing will tear you down.
